from a small business to a thriving organization: Fahrenheit advisors’ growth story

When Keith Middleton and Rich Reinecke co-founded Fahrenheit Advisors in 2010, they managed everything themselves. They operated as a flat organization, focusing on growth and client demands with minimal emphasis on leadership development or formal strategy.

But as they approached their 10th anniversary, the founders paused to reflect on their future. Keith explained, “We asked ourselves: Do we want to become a lifestyle business, or do we want to continue to push the pedal down and scale?”

The decision was clear—they wanted to grow. However, to do so, they realized they needed a leadership team and a deeper focus on organizational development. Leadership training became the foundation of their transformation.

3 key takeaways from fahrenheit’s leadership development journey

Through leadership training and strategic development, Fahrenheit Advisors implemented three critical changes that propelled the company forward:

1. a formal strategy

In the early days, the company followed client needs wherever they led. However, growth was limited without a clear, unified strategy. Leadership training encouraged the team to develop a comprehensive strategy that aligned employees with the company’s goals.

Keith explained, “Having a formal strategy was a game changer. It provided clarity, not just for the leadership team but for every employee, about where we were going and how we’d get there.”

2. leadership team development

Fahrenheit assembled a leadership team of experienced leaders and invested in their development. Through training, primarily through the Leadership Institute, they established:

  • A common language for clear communication across the team
  • Standard agendas to streamline meetings and decision-making
  • Continuous improvement practices to strengthen the team’s effectiveness over time

3. deep relationships

Leadership training also fostered trust and collaboration within the team. By assessing individual motives and leadership styles, the team learned to navigate differences in perspectives and priorities.

Keith described the impact: “We learned to bridge gaps—whether someone was more performance-driven or people-driven—and build stronger relationships. That’s been invaluable.”

personal growth as a leader

For Keith, the leadership training journey wasn’t just about improving the company but also about personal growth. Through the Leadership Institute’s Mastering Leadership Dynamics class, he developed a leadership purpose: “To truly seek to understand and empower people.”

He reflected, “I thought I listened and empowered my team, but I realized I was only empowering them if they did things my way. Leadership training helped me shift my mindset and trust my team more.”

This transformation has shaped Fahrenheit’s culture and leadership style, enabling the company to scale while maintaining a people-first approach.

recruitment and retention in a tough labor market

Fahrenheit’s leadership transformation has been instrumental in addressing some of the toughest challenges businesses face today: recruitment and retention. Keith shared three key strategies that have helped Fahrenheit succeed in a competitive labor market.

3 key strategies to recruit and retain talent

1. building a strong culture

From the beginning, Fahrenheit prioritized brand and culture. Leadership training deepened this focus, creating a sense of purpose that resonates with employees.

“Early on, we didn’t focus on the ‘why.’ Now, we’re centered on purpose, and that’s made a huge difference in recruiting and retaining talent,” Keith explained.

2. create career development opportunities

Employees today are looking for more than just a paycheck—they want clear career paths and opportunities for growth. Fahrenheit has responded by investing in employee development and prioritizing career progression.

3. foster work-life integration

Keith emphasized the importance of flexibility in today’s workplace. “Life comes to work, and sometimes work goes into life. We give our employees the flexibility to deal with life and engage with it. That’s been huge for us, especially in the last few years.”

lessons for business leaders

Fahrenheit’s journey offers valuable lessons for leaders navigating today’s challenges:

  • Invest in Leadership Development: Build strong leaders who can guide your organization through growth and change.
  • Align Around a Common Purpose: Create a clear strategy that connects employees to the company’s mission.
  • Prioritize Employee Engagement: Develop a people-first culture that fosters trust, growth, and flexibility.

These strategies have helped Fahrenheit Advisors thrive, growing from a small startup to a nationwide firm with over 140 consultants. They’re also the foundation for tackling the challenges of today’s labor market and creating a workplace that attracts and retains top talent.
